The Princeton University Department of Public Safety (DPS) would like to introduce you to our newest member, Coach! Coach joined DPS in August 2021 to serve as the Princeton University Department of Public Safety Police Service Dog. She is a two-year-old Labrador Retriever who loves belly scratches, performing tricks, and meeting new friends!

Coach comes to DPS as a gift from Puppies Behind Bars. Since 1997, Puppies Behind Bars has worked with prison inmates to train service dogs for wounded war veterans, first responders, and explosive detection. At eight weeks old, the puppies begin their training and move in with their assigned inmate or “puppy-raiser” for two years. Once they have successfully completed the training program, each service dog is paired with their new forever partner and joins their community.

Coach was not trained to detect drugs or explosives. She is a trained service dog, ready and willing to serve the greater Princeton University community. If you have not yet met Coach and her partner Detective Sergeant Al Flanders, you can find them at University athletic events, study breaks, or walking around campus.

Just like the Department of Public Safety, Coach values "community caretaking" and is committed to using her unique skills to provide comfort wherever it is needed most.
